SHALLOTTE—Shallotte is one step closer to a new apartment complex—River Pointe Apartments.

The proposed apartment complex encompasses a 62-unit, 4-building complex at 4620 White Street on 6.27 acres of land.

“I am here to answer any questions you might have about our project,” Brian Smith of Southern Properties & Development said to aldermen at the April board meeting.

Smith represents the property owners Maurice Hawes and the estate of Elba Hawes.

A public hearing was conducted for a conditional use plan as the property is zoned multi-family (MF-10), and multi-family dwellings are a conditional use in that district.

The public hearing was closed without anyone in the audience speaking. The board voted unanimously to approve the conditional use permit.

Auto dealership

A public hearing was also conducted concerning a conditional use permit and site landscaping approval to operate a used automobile dealership in and around the existing 2,556 square-foot building on 2-acres at 541 Whiteville Road (across the street from the high school). The property is zoned business (B-2), and automobile and truck dealers are a conditional use in that district. The board approved the conditional use permit.

The Shallotte Planning Board initiated an amendment to the Shallotte Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) to allow existing parking lots to be restriped or reconfigured without adding landscaping islands at the ends of parking rows where they do not already exist and to place landscape islands every 20 rather than every 15 consecutive parking spaces, provided that impervious coverage is not increased. Aldermen approved the amendment.
