Sloup wins conference title in golf

 South Brunswick High School junior Ashley Sloup shot a 6-over-par 78 and won the Waccamaw Conference championship golf tournament Oct. 15 at the Members Course of St. James Plantation.

Sloup also led the Cougars to the team title.

Sloup shot 40-38 playing from the green tees (5,346 yards) on the Irwin Course. She had five pars on the front nine. Of her four bogies, two were on the par 5s (508 yards on opening hole and 479 on the sixth hole).

On her 2-over par back nine, after making a bogey on the 384-yard par-4 11th, Sloup made a birdie on the 124-yard par-3 12th hole. She made a double bogey on the 411-yard par-5 15th and a bogey on the 285-yard par-4 17th, but she finished her round by making a birdie on the 413-yard par-5 18th.

West sophomore Cameryn Smith shot a 43-41—84 and finished second. She had five pars on the front nine, including one of the par-5 first hole. On the back nine, she played her last five holes 1-over par.

South sophomore Janzen Jones shot 46-47—93 and finished third. No one else broke 100.

North’s top finisher was Jennifer Basker, fourth overall.

Other finishers: 5. West sophomore Megan Henson, 6. South freshman Jordan Saunders, 7. South freshman Michelle Eddinger, 8. North’s Julia Ganey, 9. North’s Emily Lamm; 10. South freshman Lilly Beecroft.

In the team competition, South shot a 109 and North a 117. West had no team.
