South Brunswick Rotary hears about Equity House Project

-A A +A

Past South Brunswick Islands Rotarian President Denny Jordan expressed an interest in developing a meaningful international project and this resulted in a partnership between the Rotary Club of Belmopan, Belize, and the South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club.
With the combined efforts of SBI Rotarians Maribeth Achterberg, Dan Lynes, Toni Titone and Jen Vanasse, matching grant money from Rotary District 7730 and the Rotary Foundation, as well as a donation from the Belmopan Rotary Club, a SBI donation of $500 was leveraged to $10,000 of support for the Equity House.
Equity House is a clinic that provides healthcare to Hopkins, a village 45 miles away from the nearest public healthcare in Dongripa, Belize. The clinic, opened in 2005, is currently in the garage of the home built by Judy and Rich Krieg. Judy, a nurse, and Rich, a retired U. S. Air Force colonel, moved to Judy’s homeland of Belize after their retirement. Their retirement has become a full-time service project as the clinic is providing services to 1,600 men, women and children in the garage-transformed clinic. The Kriegs also use a passenger van for reaching remote locations.
The Rotary partnership money is being used to recondition the clinic’s van, to purchase a laptop computer and software for maintaining patient records, and to provide medical supplies and pharmaceuticals for the Equity House.
Titone, a retired educator who had helped Judy Krieg in the Equity House, brought the idea of the project to the SBI club.
