South Brunswick doubled the score on North Brunswick 10-5 last Tuesday.

“We hit the ball extremely well,” South coach Lee Shelton said. “Hopefully, we can build this momentum going into the playoffs. I’m pleased with this effort.”

Ryan Brendle tripled and doubled twice and went 3-for-4, Ben Maggard doubled and went 2-for-3, Edward McNeill doubled and went 2-for-5, and Johnathan Marvin went 2-for-4.

Winning pitcher Ryan Waldrep tripled in his only time at-bat.

South has a 7-3 conference record and 10-9 overall mark.

South Brunswick fell behind 4-0, but Elliot Swain hit a 3-run homer in the third inning to cut into the lead, and the Cougars exploded for six runs in the fourth in the 12-9 win.

“We did what we had to do to win,” South coach Lee Shelton said. “Brian Wells did a great job in relief. We got some timely hitting.”

Wells was the winning pitcher. Swain went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. Edward McNeill went 2-for-3 with a triple, and Ryan Morgan went 2-for-3. Ryan Waldrep, Mitch McCarley and Cody Piette each went 2-for-4.

South is 8-3 in the conference and 11-9 overall.

South Brunswick and Whiteville each qualified for the 2A Regional at Carolina Sands in Elizabethtown, after a match April 28 at Oak Island Country Club.

Dalton Gore was medalist for the Cougars with an 80, followed by Blake Cato and Bradley Narron with 82s and Mitchell Brendle with 86.

Softball

Brittany Spivey went 4-for-4 and batted in every run as South Brunswick nipped North Brunswick 5-4 last Tuesday.

Jenna Kazmeirczak went 2-for-3 for the winners, and Candace Piner was the winning pitcher.

Sheniqua Harrison went 3-for-4 for North Brunswick and had a double. Shintia Thomas had two hits in four trips to the plate.

South Brunswick is 8-5 in the conference and 10-8 overall.

COUGARS GOLFERS

HEADED TO STATES

South Brunswick’s team qualified for the 2A state championships May 12-13 at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.

In the regional Monday, the Cougars shot 316, one shot behind regional champ Richlands. South’s Dalton Gore finished runner-up in the individual competition with a 74. Blake Cato tied for third with a 76, while Richard Weinacht and Mitchell Brendle each shot 85.

Girls track

COSTELLO WINS REGIONAL

South Brunswick’s Suzanne Costello won the 800-meter run at at the Eastern 2A Regionals March 3 in Swansboro.

Her time was 2:34.63.

Costello finished runner-up in the 1,600-meter run in 5:41.39.

South’s Jenna Kazmierzak finished runner-up at regionals in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time was 16.84 seconds behind winner Samantha Hammonds’ 16.71.

Kazmierzak also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.41 seconds behind Swansboro’s Hammonds’ 49.88.

Cougar Nicole Ray finished fourth at regionals in both the long jump in 15’4” and the triple jump in 30’5”.

South Brunswick finished fourth in the 4 X 200-meter relay in 1:59.99 with Crystal Jones, Arlenna Ray, Bree Gawron and Greer Jones.

The Cougars finished fourth in the 4 X 100-meter relay in 4:32.81 with Katelyn Garner, Katelyn Locklear, Kazmierzak and Briana Norton.

North Brunswick finished third in the 4 X 100-meter relay at regionals in 53.11 seconds with Tyera Fisher, Jevonne Riley, Teisha Knox and Lynse McNeil.

Final team scores were Swansboro 153, Red Springs 60, Northside 58, South Brunswick 50, First Flight 39, Southwest Onslow 32, Croatan 31, St. Pauls 26, Northeastern 23, South Lenoir 21, West Bladen 19, East Duplin 18, Pasquotank 8, North Brunswick 7 and Richlands 2.

Boys track

GILBERT FINISHES THIRD

South Brunswick’s Greg Gilbert finished third in both the long jump in 20’11 inches and in the triple jump.

North Brunswick won the regional team competition with 107 points. South was 10th with 15.
