South Brunswick High School swim coach Lucia Kincer already is looking ahead to next season after watching the Cougars’ performance in the Class 1A/2A state meet last Saturday at the N.C. State University pool in Raleigh.

“I’m looking forward to moving up on our finishes,” Kincer said after the Cougar girls came in 17th with 44 points and boys finished 20th with 30 points. Some 76 schools took part in the meet.

“This wasn’t South’s best finish at state,” Kincer said, “but it was the youngest team I have taken there. We only had one senior (John Minton). I’m still very proud that we finished in the top 20.”

The Lady Cougars were 11th at state in the 2006 meet while the Cougar boys came in 10th at last year’s state meet.

Kincer hopes to keep most of this team intact during the summer as members of the Brunswick County Marlins Swim Team.

“I’m hoping some of the young swimmers will be ready to step up and fill in our weaker areas,” Kincer said.

In Saturday’s meet, the Cougars set three school records while each of the swimmers equaled or bettered their fastest times.

The girls’ medley relay team of Jessica Falor (backstroke), Meagan Garner (breaststroke), Mary Ann Kincer (butterfly) and Kirsten Hennessey (freestyle) set a school record with a time of 2:05.36. It was good enough for 10th place and earned 14 points.

Individually, Kincer broke the school mark in the 100 butterfly (1:06.85), finishing 14th overall. She also finished ninth in the 50 freestyle.

Minton shattered the school mark in the 100 freestyle (56.14), where he placed 23rd.

Coach Kincer and assistant coach Wes Cross set mini goals for each swimmer, and all beat them.

The boys’ 200 medley relay team of Cody Spencer (backstroke), Pyry Helkkula (breaststroke), Elias Gilbert (butterfly) and Minton (freestyle) came in 10th.

Cody Spencer was 13th in the 100 backstroke, the girls’ 200 freestyle relay team (Hennessey, Garner, Falor and Kincer) was ninth and the boys’ 200 freestyle relay team (Cody Spencer, Andrew Bates, Will Spencer and Minton) was 11th.

Other swimmers who turned in top performances but didn’t make it back to the finals included Elias Gilbert in the 100 butterfly, (19th), Hennessey in the 100 butterfly (21st) and Minton in the 100 freestyle (23rd).

The girls’ 400 freestyle relay team (Falor, Kelley Presson, Madison McCune and Hennessey) was 18th and the boys’ 400 freestyle relay team (Cody Spencer, Elias Gilbert, Jonas Gilbert and Minton) was 17th.

Cardinal Gibbons High of Raleigh won both the boys’ and girls’ competitions, winning the girls’ for the third consecutive year.

Lenoir Hibriten’s Kyle Hites shared boys’ MVP honors with Carrboro’s Kenneth Ryan.

Hites was entered in the maximum four events, including the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay in which his teams set state records. He also won the 200 individual medley and set a state 1A/2A standard with a time of 1:01.69 in winning the 100 breaststroke. Ryan won the 100 backstroke and set a classification record in the 50 freestyle.

West Davidson’s Kelly Ann Baird was the girls’ MVP, winning both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. She set a 1A/2A mark in the 500 freestyle with a time that earned automatic All-American honors.
