South swimmers qualify for state

South Brunswick qualified three relays for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A swim meet this week.
The team of sophomore Savanna Michaux, junior Michelle Richards, junior Morgan Gilbert and senior Rachel Van Noordt finished seventh in 1 minute, 52.42 seconds in a qualifying race Saturday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. The winning time in the regional was 1:43.64 by Cardinal Gibbons.
The top 12 finishers in each regional event qualify for the state meet Friday at the same site.
South’s 200 medley relay of Van Noordt, Richards, sophomore Lauren Johnson and Michaux finished ninth in 2:10.61.  The winning time was 1:51.68 by Chapel Hill.
South’s 400 freestyle relay of senior Brooke Beasley, Johnson, Gilbert and junior Katelyn Auger finished ninth in 4:24.98 which was 15 seconds better than its seeded time. The winning time was 3:40.05 by Chapel Hill.
Van Noordt qualified for two individual events. She was 10th in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 58.99 seconds. The winning time was 54.63.
Van Noordt was 11th in the individual medley, finishing in 2:27.33. The winning time was 2:07.58.
Gilbert finished 10th in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.56. The winning time was 58.24.
West’s only regional qualifier, junior Meg Fletcher, was 17th in the 100 backstroke. She finished in 1:13.75. The 12-place time was 1:10.25.
South placed ninth in the region by scoring 80 points.
