The South Brunswick girls tennis team opened its conference season by routing East Columbus 9-0.

The Cougars, who completed a season sweep of West Brunswick with a 9-0 victory Aug. 25, are 5-0 for the season.

“I knew East Columbus still had some strong players—their top three—from last year’s team,” South coach Debbie Adams said. “But my girls proved to be better.”

At No. 1, Summer Phillips beat Valerie Edwards 6-3, 6-1.

“Summer played a very athletic (opponent),” Adams said, “but Summer’s smart plays and pounding groundstrokes were too much for her.”

Katie Soden and Leighann Scheetz rallied from first-set losses to win in third-set tiebreakers. Soden beat Victoria Sellers 3-6, 6-0, 10-6. Scheetz beat Sierra Edwards 1-6, 7-5, 10-8.

“Both Katie and Leighann had more stamina,” Adams said, “which helped pull them through.”

The final three singles matches were routs. At No. 4, Lauren Scheetz beat Anita Greene 6-2, 6-1. At No. 5, Sarah Brock beat Skye Jacobs 6-1, 6-0. At No. 6, Hilary Walker beat Hope Bordeaux 6-0, 6-0.
