Spay-neuter program under way

Cat traps related to a local spay-neuter program have arrived and are now available for checkout at Shallotte Town Hall.

The program is connected to the efforts of Brunswick County nonprofit Paws-Ability in conjunction with PetSmart Charities, which recently awarded a $45,000 grant to assist with cat spaying and neutering in the Shallotte, Supply and Holden Beach areas. It’s the largest spay-neuter grant Paws-Ability has ever received, according to Paws-Ability founder and president Janie Withers.

The money will go to spay and neuter up to about 1,200 “loosely owned” and community cats in those areas. Surgery will be done a Fix A Friend Spay & Neuter Clinic, a low-cost facility that opened in July 2013 in Winnabow.

Withers’ group is circulating fliers with information at the chamber of commerce as well as at town halls in Shallotte and Holden Beach, the senior center and police department. Applicants must have addresses with Shallotte, Supply or Holden Beach ZIP codes.

Before the end of its first year, Fix A Friend will have done 4,000 surgeries, Withers said.

Go to www.paws-ability.org to click and download the form.

The program works by completing an application, then calling Fix A Friend to make a reservation for surgery at (910) 253-8161.

Clients are required to arrive at Fix A Friend at 8 a.m. on the day of scheduled surgery with a completed application. Feral cats must be in a trap and pets must be in a carrier.

Spay or neuter surgery, rabies and distemper shots and ear clips for a stray or feral cat are done for free.

Pet owners pay a $14 co-pay fee for pets, which includes a rabies vaccination. Pet owners may also opt for a $20 co-pay for pets, which includes both rabies and distemper. Co-pays are paid to Fix A Friend Spay Neuter Clinic on the day of surgery.
