South doubles team loses
The South Brunswick doubles team of Morgan Gilbert and Brooke Munroe lost in the quarterfinals of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A Regional Friday at Barton College.
In the first round, Gilbert and Munroe, both juniors beat Jacksonville’s Chloe Brown and Brianna Carberry 6-0, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Triton’s Jennifer Byrd and Cailin Goff, the No. 2 seed, beat Gilbert and Munroe 6-1, 6-1.
The regional is a qualifier for the state tournament. Players have to reach the semifinals to qualify for state.
Cedric Simmons update
Cedric Simmons did not start and played 18 minutes in Enel Brindisi’s 84-80 loss in an Italian professional basketball league game Oct. 21. Simmons scored four points and blocked a shot. He led his team in rebounds with nine.
Simmons is averaging 7.3 rebounds a game, eighth best in the league, and is blocking an average of two shots a game, the best in the league.
Enel Brindisi is 1-3 in the 16-team league.
