Powerhouse Warriors sign-ups March 10
Powerhouse Warriors basketball travel teams are having tryouts 4:30-6 p.m. March 10 at West Brunswick High School gym for girls in fifth through eighth grades. The tryout fee is $15. The Powerhouse Warriors development program will have a demonstration session 9-10 a.m. March 10 at the West Brunswick High School gym for boys and girls in the third through sixth grades. The program costs $125 and lasts from mid-March to mid-June. Participants also receive a T-shirt and shoulder bag. Sign ups will be immediately after the session. Coed softball registration
Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the 2012 coed softball leagues. Team registration fees are $500. Teams will play on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings at Lockwood Folly Park, Shallotte Park or Smithville Park. The league managers’ meeting is 6:30 p.m. May 10 at the Parks and Recreation Building in the second floor conference room. Free tennis clinics
A free tennis clinic is at 4 p.m. March 10 at the Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center and is for those ages 4-16. Another clinic is at 4 p.m. March 17 for those ages 18 or older. Each is 90 minutes. These free clinics will consist of the introduction to tennis, learn the fundamentals of this sport, games, and what the benefits are from playing this lifelong sport.
Water fitness instruction course March 24
The Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center at Brunswick Community College will have a national certification course for water fitness instructors from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. March 24 This course is open to anyone 16 or older. In addition to the basic certification, there will be an advanced course for those who have a minimum of three years experience teaching water exercise and at least 150 hours of actual experience teaching water exercise. Youth swim lessons in March
Youth swim lessons for those ages 4-9 will take place Mondays through Thursdays at the Winds Beach Club, Ocean Isle Beach. The first session begins March 19 and ends March 29. The second session begins April 16 and ends April 26. Fee: $65. Call 253-2583 to register or for more information.
Lucky Leprechaun 5K Run March 10
The Lucky Leprechaun 5K Run March begins at 9 a.m. March 10 at the Winds Beach Resort at Ocean Isle Beach. This will be a celebratory, holiday event. Race participants are encouraged to dress in St. Patrick’s Day apparel. The 5K course will take participants on a scenic tour of the eastern part of the island. The race will begin and end in front of the Winds Beach Resort (310 E. 1st St.). Adults can sign up before Feb 23 for $25 and kids 12 and younger can sign up for $15. After Feb. 23, registration is $30 and $20, respectively. T-shirts are only guaranteed to those who register by Feb. 23. Proceeds from the race will provide scholarships to low-income youth and adults for participation in Brunswick County Parks and Recreation programs. Lockwood Folly to host state tourney
Lockwood Folly will be the host of the North Carolina Dixie Youth Baseball Coach-Pitch State Tournament July 6-10. Sixteen 12-player teams will compete. Programs with ads will be sold at the tourney. Racquet Relay April 13
The St. James Tennis Association is sponsoring a 12-hour Racquet Relay from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. April 11 at the St. James Founders Courts. The rain date is April 13 at the same time and place. This event is open for either doubles or singles, and there is a minimum of $10/hour/person contribution requested for doubles or $20/hour/person for singles play. The event is non-competitive, so any combination of skills, genders or age categories is encouraged. Sign up at the St. James tennis pro shop 253-3008, ext. 6.
Oak Island Lighthouse Run adds half marathon

Swim programs at aquatics center
The Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center at Brunswick Community College offers a variety of American Red Cross Programs throughout the year. Coming this spring the Aquatics Center is offering learn to swim lifeguarding and water safety instructor courses.
The learn-to-swim program offers swim lesson opportunities those ages 6 months through adult. Spring II session: April 23-June 4.
Learn to be a certified lifeguard or update your lifeguard certifications in the lifeguarding and lifeguard recertification courses: 5:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 29, Saturdays 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. March 10-31; 5:30-6:30 p.m. June 5, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. June 11-14; recertification April 13, April 17 or April 19.
In the safety instructor course, proficient swimmers will learn how to teach children and adults how to swim and to help families learn to be safe in and around water: 5:30-6:30 p.m. April 4; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. April 9-12.. For more details, visit www.bccfitness.com or call 846-2348.
