Soccer Challenge set for Aug. 29
The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is 5 p.m. Aug. 29 at St Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church, 5101 Ocean Highway West in Shallotte.
The Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary Council 9039 in Shallotte will be conducting a soccer challenge for all boys and girls ages 10-14. Participation forms will be available at the event and must be signed by a parent or guardian. Contestants please bring a copy of your birth certificate.
Brunswick County Fall Ball League sign-ups
The Brunswick County Fall Ball League is signing up athletes ages 5-11. Sign-ups are 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. Aug. 18 and 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Aug. 25 at Lockwood Folly Park or Waccamaw Park.
There are three age groups: Coach pitch for ages 5-7, minors for ages 8-9 and majors for ages 10-11. Players must be 5-years-old before June 1 and can’t turn 12 before June 1.
This is an instructional league and each child will play 10 to 12 games. Coaches stress teamwork, respectfulness, fundamentals and fun. The season will run from Sept. 17-Oct. 32. A copy of each child’s birth record is required at sign-ups.
The cost is $35 per player and includes a shirt and a hat. For more information, call Glenn Hart at 367-6469.
Just for Kicks soccer shoot is Aug. 18
Calabash Elks Lodge 2679 will have its annual soccer shoot for boys and girls ages 6-13 on Aug. 18. The rain date is Aug. 25. It will be at the Calabash Elks Lodge, 937 Carter Drive, in Calabash. The competition begins at 11 a.m. First-place trophies will be awarded. Winner of the various age groups will participate in the district competition in Wilmington. The event will consist of kicking a soccer ball through five goals of various size openings. Points are made for each goal made. Children will compete in four age groups. Refreshments will be served.

Annual BFA run is Sept. 8
The 14th annual fundraising race benefiting Brunswick Family Assistance (BFA) is set for Sept. 8, at Sea Trail Golf Resort & Conference Center in Sunset Beach.
The race consists of four events to suit the needs of every level of runner: a 10K and 5K run, a 10K walk and a 1-mile fun run. Once again this year the BFA 10K/5K is the first of a three Race Series which also includes the Oktoberfest 15K at Brunswick Forest on Oct. 14 and the Battleship Half Marathon on Nov. 4 in Wilmington. Runners who complete all three races will receive an extra prize package from 5 Star Race Productions, which is managing the BFA race. The entry fees are $30 for the 10K run and 10K walk ($35 after Aug. 12), $25 for the 5K run ($30 after Aug. 12), and $15 for the 1-mile fun run.
Participants can register for the race online at 5starraceproductions.com and brunswickfamily.org. All runners will receive a race shirt. Awards will be provided to the top three male and female finishers and the top two age-group (male and female) finishers. Start times are at 7:30 a.m. for the 10K walk; 7:40 a.m. for the 1-mile fun run; and 8 a.m. for the 10K & 5K runs.

The sponsorship ads are $500, $350, $250 and $100 depending on the placement of the business logo on the race shirt. All proceeds from the race benefit BFA, which is dedicated to improving the lives of neighbors in crisis in Brunswick County.
Surf Off is Sept. 1
The Oak Island Surf Off to benefit a scholarship for a county high school graduate will be at 8 a.m. Sept. 1 at Ocean Crest Pier. Register 6-9 p.m. Aug. 31. Awards to top three finishers in 14 categories. Call 278-7000 for more information.
