Annual BFA race is set for Sept. 8
The 14th annual fundraising race benefiting Brunswick Family Assistance (BFA) is set for Sept. 8, at Sea Trail Golf Resort & Conference Center in Sunset Beach.
The race consists of four events to suit the needs of every level of runner: a 10K and 5K run, a 10K walk and a 1-mile fun run. Once again this year the BFA 10K/5K is the first of a three Race Series which also includes the Oktoberfest 15K at Brunswick Forest on Oct. 14 and the Battleship Half Marathon on Nov. 4 in Wilmington. Runners who complete all three races will receive an extra prize package from 5 Star Race Productions, which is managing the BFA race. The entry fees are $30 for the 10K run and 10K walk ($35 after Aug. 12), $25 for the 5K run ($30 after Aug. 12), and $15 for the 1-mile fun run.
Participants can register for the race online at 5starraceproductions.com and brunswickfamily.org.  All runners will receive a race shirt. Awards will be provided to the top three male and female finishers and the top two age-group (male and female) finishers. Start times are at 7:30 a.m. for the 10K walk; 7:40 a.m. for the 1-mile fun run; and 8 a.m. for the 10K & 5K runs.
Businesses and organizations that wish to help sponsor the BFA 10K/5K Race should call Ken Papaj at 842-2959 or (703) 969-4599. The sponsorship ads are $500, $350, $250 and $100 depending on the placement of the business logo on the race shirt. All proceeds from the race benefit BFA, which is dedicated to improving the lives of neighbors in crisis in Brunswick County.
Weight loss program begins Sept. 13
Brunswick Parks and Recreation is offering a 16-week behavioral weight loss program for women ages 18-64 with a BMI of +27. The class meets 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursdays Sept. 13-Nov. 29 at the Government Complex in Bolivia, Building M. Mandatory private consultation required by Sept. 12. Youth, adult tennis lessons begin in September
Youth and adult tennis lessons will be offered in the fall at Ocean Isle Beach Park, Lockwood Folly Park and Smithville District Park. The fee is $65 per person. For more information, contact Ruthie McHugh at 253-2583 or email her at rmchugh@brunsco.net.
The adult lessons at Ocean Isle Beach Park and Smithville District Park are evenings Sept. 5-Oct. 10 and Oct. 17-Nov. 21. The adult lessons at Lockwood Folly Park are Sept. 4-Oct. 9
and Oct. 16-Nov. 20. The times are 5:30-6:30 p.m. for beginners and 6:45-7:45 p.m. for intermediate.
The youth lessons are for those 4-7 (3:30-4:30 p.m.), 8-10 (4:30-5:30 p.m.) and 10-14 (5:30-6:30 p.m.) Sept. 10-Oct. 15 and Oct. 22-Nov. 26.

Adult Halloween tennis tournament
The adult Halloween tennis tournament, organized by Brunswick Parks and Recreation, is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Ocean Isle Beach Park (rain date is Oct. 28). This is for intermediate and advanced tennis players ages 18 and older. Singles fee is $15. Century doubles fee is $25. Same gender and mixed doubles fee is $25. Costumes encouraged. Brunswick County Youth Basketball League sign-ups
Registration is open for the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball League, open to boys and girls in first through sixth grades. Mandatory skills analysis is Nov. 16. Games will be played at Shallotte Middle School, South Brunswick Middle School, Leland Middle and Cedar Grove Middle School. Deadline to register is Nov. 19. Registration fee is $40 per person.
