Adult Halloween tennis tournament
The adult Halloween tennis tournament, organized by Brunswick Parks and Recreation, is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Ocean Isle Beach Park (rain date is Oct. 28). This is for intermediate and advanced tennis players ages 18 and older. Singles fee is $15. Century doubles fee is $25. Same gender and mixed doubles fee is $25. Costumes encouraged. Halloween golf tournament is Oct. 19
The Oak Island Parks & Recreation is sponsoring a fun-filled team nine-hole nighttime golf tournament beginning at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Oak Island Par 3 at South Harbour. Teams of two will play in a best-ball format. Cost is $15 for SHGL members and $20 for non-members and will include one glow ball and glow stick for each participant, door prizes and heavy hors d’oeuvres before tee-off.
Participation is limited to the first 18 teams. There will be prizes for first- and second-place teams, as well as a costume contest. For more information, call 278-5518.
Fishing derby is Oct. 25
Oak Island Parks & Recreation and the Oak Island Pier are sponsoring a haunted fishing derby from 5-7 p.m. Oct 25 at the Oak Island Pier. The derby is free and open to all youth ages 12 and younger. All kids who wear a costume will receive a goodie bag. There will be many prizes in different categories, such as: most fish caught, largest fish, scariest fish, ugliest fish, haunted fish, etc. Participants will need to bring their own fishing rod and bait. Brunswick County Youth Basketball League sign-ups
Registration is open for the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball League, open to boys and girls in first through sixth grades. Mandatory skills analysis is Nov. 16. Games will be played at Shallotte Middle School, South Brunswick Middle School, Leland Middle and Cedar Grove Middle School. Deadline to register is Nov. 19. Registration fee is $40 per person. Race Oct. 13 benefits Parkinson’s research
The Mary Lu Blasdell Memorial 5K Run/Walk is 8:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at the pavilion off Jordan Boulevard underneath the Holden Beach Bridge. All proceeds go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Gold’s Gym, Shallotte, sponsors the race. Entry fee before Oct. 6 is $10; race day, $15. Call 754-2270 for more information.
