Winter fishing seminar
A winter fishing seminar will take place from 9 a.m-4:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Oak Island Recreation Center.
Fishing captains Jerry Dilsaver and Jimmy Price will share tips and techniques that may make you catch more fish. Capt. Dilsaver will cover king and offshore fishing. Capt. Price will talk about flounder and inshore species.
The fee is $60 per person in advance ($70 at the door) and those attending will receive a bag filled with samples, lunch and door prizes.

Shallotte Dixie Youth
Shallotte Dixie Youth has registration for its 2013 season from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Jan. 19 at the Shallotte Middle School cafeteria. This is for those ages 3-12 who want to play baseball or softball.

Dixie Baseball and Softball
Dixie Boys Baseball, Dixie Belles, Debs Softball and Pre-Majors registration lasts until March 2. Registration fee is $50. Program is for girls 13-19 and boys 13-15 years old. Call 253-2670 for more information.

Leland race is Feb. 2
The inaugural Whistle Pig 1-mile and 5-kilometer races are 9 a.m. Feb. 2 at Westgate Park (126 Westgate Drive) in Leland. Race shirts are guaranteed to those who register by Jan. 18. The fee for the 1-mile run is $15 by Jan. 18, $20 afterward. For the 5-kilometer race, the fee is $25 by Jan. 18, $30 afterward. Register at go-time.com.

Coed volleyball program
Open play volleyball for those 55 or older is
10:15 a.m.-noon every Monday at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center on the Brunswick Community College Campus. Free. All skill levels welcome. Call 253-2677 for more information.

Brunswick County Gator Senior Games
Registration is open for the 2013 Gator Senior Games and SilverArts Program, set for April 3-May 10. This is friendly competition covering 80 athletics events. SilverArts includes all heritage, literary, visual and performing arts. The program is for participants 55 or older. Registration includes senior games T-shirt. Deadline to register is March 6. This program is co-sponsored by Brunswick County Parks and Recreation, Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center, Rich Tours Travel and Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. Champion Youth Outreach-Youth Karate
Classes for youth karate are Thursdays Jan. 24-May 23 at the 5th District Building, Room 4, Leland. Registration is 30 minutes before class on Jan. 24. Women’s weight-loss program
Brunswick County Parks and Recreation is offering a 16-week behavioral weight- loss program for women ages 18-64 with a BMI of 27 or higher. Classes will meet weekly 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays Jan. 22-April 9 at South Brunswick Island Center or Thursdays Jan. 24-April 11 at Bolivia Government Complex. Cost is $65 per person.
