WATER FITNESS CLASS FOCUSES ON ARTHRITIS
Beginning June 6, The Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center at Brunswick Community College will begin offering new water fitness classes designed specifically for people with arthritis and related diseases. These classes will take place at 1 p.m. Mondays and 11 a.m. Thursdays and are available to both members and non-members of the Fitness & Aquatics Center. Monthly cost is $5 for one class per week for members and $12 for non-members. Two classes per week are $8 for members and $20 for non-members.
While designed by the Arthritis Foundation these classes are not only for those with arthritis. These classes can be of great benefit to anyone seeking to improve their range of motion, strength, flexibility, balance and coordination, including individuals recovering from illnesses or injuries.
Instructors for these classes will be Stacey Reardon, aquatics coordinator at the Fitness & Aquatics Center, Sandra Huth and Cheryle Syracuse. Reardon, Huth and Syracuse recently completed training in “Take Control with Water Exercise” water fitness instructor training. This training is part of the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program and certifies instructors to conduct water fitness classes for participants with arthritis. All three are certified water fitness instructors and teach water aerobics classes at the Aquatics Center.
These classes will take place in the warm water shallow pool, a barrier-free pool that can be entered without the need of a ladder. For more information call (910) 846-2348.
The Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center will have a lifeguard training course June 10 from 4-5:30 p.m. (pre-course test) June 10 and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. June 13-16. SUMMER FITNESS CLASSES
Water fitness classes are being offered through Sept. 1 at the Winds Beach Resort at Ocean Isle Beach. Aqua Zumba is being offered June 2 to Sept. 1. Zumba is being offered 8:15 a.m.-9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays June 2 to Sept. 1 at Body Dimensions. Fee is $35 a month, $10 drop-in. YOUTH BOWLING CAMP AND LEAGUE
Brunswick County Parks and Recreation and Planet Fun are sponsoring a bowling camp for those ages 5-18 no matter what skill level. Camp is June 13-16 and Aug. 8-11. There also is six-week league June 21-Aug. 2. Cost for the camp is $30 per child per week. The league cost is $40 per child. Register before June 1 and receive two free bowling passes. WEST BOYS’ BASKETBALL CAMP
The West Brunswick High School boys’ basketball camp is June 20-22. This camp is for rising third- and eighth-grade boys. Camp will help boys learn the basic skills of basketball and includes fun activities and contests. All campers will receive a T-shirt. Camp cost is $30 per camper. YOUTH FOOTBALL, CHEERLEADING REGISTRATION
Registration is open for the youth football program and the youth football cheerleading squads. Deadline for registration is July 31. Each of the 12 teams is limited to the first 35 players/cheerleaders registered. Fee is $50; after July 31, $65.
BCTA QUICK START TENNIS
Quick Start tennis is for those ages 5-10. Registration fee is $15 and covers the use of a racket, balls and T-shirt. Deadline to register is June 10. Session 1 is June 13-June 24 at Ocean Isle Beach Park tennis courts. Session 2 is July 11- 22 at South Brunswick High School tennis courts.
SUMMER TENNIS LESSONS (YOUTH AND ADULT)
Brunswick County Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations for summer tennis lessons. Lessons are at Smithville Park, Ocean Isle Beach Park and Cedar Grove Park. Classes for youth are from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Ages and skill level vary. Adult lessons are are from 5:30-7:45 p.m. Skill level and times vary. Private tennis lessons also available.
Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department is offering men’s softball leagues. The leagues play a regular-season schedule followed by a double-elimination tournament. The season starts early August. Team registration fees are $500. Teams will play on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings at Lockwood Folly, Shallotte Park or Smithville Park. Two divisions of play may be offered based on level of competition. A league managers meeting is 6:30 p.m. July 15 on the second-floor training room of the Administration Building in Bolivia.
