Guest artists join member artists as Southport’s Franklin Square Gallery opens its doors for the season on March 1 with its annual Spring Art Show. For this special exhibition, contributors from throughout the region are invited to showcase their latest paintings and pottery. The show runs through March 23.
“We’re very excited to see all the new work as it comes in,” said Dot Moore, who co-chairs the show with Sheryl Sutherland. “Every year, we get several new guest artists entering a show for the first time. Last year, a gentleman from Brunswick County, who had never entered a show before, brought a beautiful seascape. It was very high end, and it sold right away.”
Regular exhibiting members of the gallery also enter the Spring Show to introduce their newest art, paintings and pottery they have created during the quiet winter months. More than 100 area and regional artists participate in this active cooperative gallery, not only to they display their work in special exhibitions, but as regularly contributors to Members Shows and The Art Loft with an array of seascapes, landscapes, still lifes, prints, giclees, cards, ceramic art and hand-crafted gifts.
The Spring Show artists vie for more than $1,500 worth of prizes and awards.
“We have excellent judges this year,” Moore said.
Robert Joyner, the two-dimensional judge, is a nationally known expressive painter from Virginia. Now one of the owners of Port City Pottery and Fine Gifts, the three-dimensional judge Pat Holleman has been actively creating ceramic art in many venues in North Carolina throughout her career.
Prizes will be presented at a reception for the artists from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 1, in the gallery exhibition area. The public is invited to meet the artists and view their work.
