Brunswick County officials would still rather see a state port than a state park go on property near Southport.
The idea of a major port created from scratch in Brunswick County was born and died between 2005 and 2010.
The Port Authority spent $10.2 million in 2006 to buy 600 acres along the Cape Fear River for the project, but the project never reached the study stage after the General Assembly rejected paying millions for a five-year feasibility study in 2010.
