If you’re worried about your children being bored this summer, Kelly James has the answer: Get them to pick up a book.

James, a library assistant at Rourk Branch Library in Shallotte, is in charge of youth services. One of her major projects is the library’s summer reading club.

The summer reading club is a countywide initiative, targeting children ages 4 to 12 to keep them reading through the summer so that they don’t lose reading skills acquired during the school year.

This year’s theme is “Dig Into Reading.” James says the program will explore a variety of books, but the focus will be primarily on nonfiction.

“I was at a conference, and they said the common-core standards have changed for the state, and they want the children to read more nonfiction,” James said. “So I am going to have a lot of displays of nonfiction, like dinosaurs and fossils.”

James said the program has been popular in the past, and she hopes it will be again this year.

“Last year, I had about a hundred kids every week,” she said.

Brunswick County Library’s five branches will feature different stories and entertainers A full schedule of library events is available at library.brunsco.net.

In addition to the nonfiction book displays, James said the library offers a variety of books for young readers, including the North Carolina Battle of the Books selections, Caldecott winners and several new arrivals.

The Dig Into Reading summer reading club will begin next week. See the info box for dates and times. Call the library to pre-register.
