Students settle into new school year

Brunswick County students are back to school. Monday marked the beginning of the new school year. The hallways of Union Elementary School were filled with smiles, laughter, excitement and tears from students and parents before school began.

Matthew Gable and his wife Kortney took their son Keaton to Tammy Pickard’s kindergarten class. He’s the couple’s first child to start school.

“It’s tough, I don’t want to leave him here,” Matthew Gable said. “I’ll be thinking of him all day.”

Keaton was all smiles and found some blocks to play with right away.

Heather Hughes took her son Parker to the same kindergarten class. Like Keaton, Parker was busy finding the perfect toy truck to play with. When asked if he was excited to start school, he replied, “Yes!”

Heather Hughes was not quite as excited.

“It’s not a good day for me,” she said. “But he’s great. He wanted to be dropped off at the front door.”
