The First Tee of Brunswick County sponsors a variety of summer programs for kids of all ages and everybody’s invited to participate. Here’s the list:
Summer golf camps. These are for kids and visiting grandkids and begin June 19 and run through Aug. 10.
The nearly weeklong camps are open to residents of Brunswick County and visitors between the ages of 7 and 17. The camps run from 8:30-11:45 a.m. Tuesday through Friday. All camps are at TFTBC’s Cinghiale Creek Golf Park, 1 mile northeast of Shallotte.
Registration fees are $25 for children who are residents of Brunswick County and $35 for non-residents. Waivers are always available to ensure all youth can participate.
Saturday par-3 scrambles. These are open to all youth between the ages of 7 and 17 regardless of skill level or involvement with The First Tee. Although advanced golfers are welcome and encouraged to attend, this is an opportunity for younger, less-experienced golfers to gain on-course playing time.
Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. and will be filled based upon age and skill level. These tee times will be announced by the middle of the week prior to the event. Seven- to 10-year-olds will play five holes; 11- through 17-year-olds will play nine holes. There will be a seven-stroke limit for all golfers. These are the dates: June 23, July 14, July 21, July 28, Aug. 4 and Aug. 11. There is no charge for these events.
Summer tour. These events are on Mondays throughout the summer at courses across Brunswick County. This will be a cumulative event with awards for girls and boys in the divisions of 11-12, 13-15 and 16-18 years of age. Participants must be birdie-certified or higher to enter. If a child would like to enter but is not a participant of The First Tee, he or she is welcome to do so but first must play a qualifying round with coach Terry Mauney.
Volunteers are needed on the days of the tour to distribute water, assist with check-in and serve as rovers on the course.
This year’s courses are Oyster Bay, Farmstead, Oak Island, The Lakes, Brunswick Plantation, Cape Fear National, Lockwood Folly, Ocean Ridge, and Thistle. The dates: June 18, June 25, July 9, July 16, July 23, July 30, Aug. 6 and championship rounds Aug. 13-14.
Family days. TFTBC will host family days one Friday each month during the summer. These will include free golf, free instruction from coach Mauney, hot dogs and refreshments, open practice and SNAG golf games. Families are asked to RSVP for these events by the Wednesday before the Family Day. Family days are June 22, July 20 and Aug. 17. Volunteers are also needed for these days to help with set up, grilling, etc.
