Summer reading fun hits local schools and libraries

Local libraries and Brunswick County Schools have lined up programs to encourage reading all summer long.
Brunswick County Schools will be open on a set schedule to allow students to check out and return books. Participating students can win prizes, including T-shirts, and help their schools win, too.

Rourk Branch Library, 5068 Main St. in Shallotte, has a Dream Big, Read summer reading club, with programs at 11 a.m. Thursdays.
The program schedule includes Gymnastics and More superstars on June 21; “Cold-Blooded Encounters” on June 28; Canine Angels on July 5; Dry Ice Magic on July 12 and Star Reader Awards and Bingo Party on July 19.

The Dream Big, Read program at Hickmans Crossroads Library, 1040 Calabash Road, takes place at 10 a.m. Tuesdays.
Upcoming programs include storyteller Jean Maxton on June 19; guest storyteller Beverly Myers on June 26; the Calabash Fire Department talking about careers and fire safety on July 3; hip hop star Melvil Dewey on July 10 and an end-of-summer reading celebration on July 17.
