Stephen and Catherine Saia, owners of Sunset Slush–Classic Italian Ice, continue to expand their business. This year marks their 10th season in business in Brunswick County.
Since last season, the Saia’s have been diligent in signing up new independent operators, building a new warehouse facility on Beach Drive in Ocean Isle Beach, and preparing for the 2012 tourist season.
New independent operators are Sunset Slush of North Raleigh, Emily and Gary McCormick; Sunset Slush of Zebulon, Tommy Perry; Sunset Slush of the Piedmont, Con and Raymonda Shelton; Sunset Slush of Pawley’s Island, Mike Junga; Sunset Slush of Topsail, Rick Petersen; Sunset Slush of St. Simons Island, Ga., Rich Dobkin; and Sunset Slush of Miami, Fla., David Pietrantonio. The Pawley’s Island and St. Simons Island locations are retail shoppes. Topsail consists of two beach concessions and the remaining are pushcart vending operations.
The Saia’s believe their growth is the result of hard work and a superior product. Sunset Slush shoppes offer more than 50 flavors, swirled or stacked, and available in three sizes: small, medium and a souvenir koozie cup. Gelatis are also available at the shoppes, a swirled combination of any flavor of Italian Ice with vanilla or chocolate ice cream.
Sunset Slush is also available at the Turtle Crossing Cupcake shop in Calabash and North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Calabash cupcake shop at 1533 Thomasboro Road offers 14 flavors of Sunset Slush–Classic Italian Ice and the North Myrtle Beach cupcake shop at 207A Main St. offers eight flavors.
Kathy Cody and Anna Arlington, owners of the Calabash Garden Tea Room, opened Turtle Crossing Cupcakes in Calabash in November 2010 and the North Myrtle Beach location in May this year. They wanted to complement their current offering of 14 flavors of cupcakes, coffee, fresh baked mini-pies, cookies, snowballs, Jersey-style crumb cakes, macaroons, and special order cupcakes cakes and cupcake tiers for weddings, birthdays, baby and bridal showers. They thought Sunset Slush–Classic Italian Ice was the perfect product for their shops. Contact them at the Calabash location at 579-1500 or at North Myrtle Beach at (843) 280-4200.
