To the editor: I have also been a longtime property owner at Ocean Isle Beach, and I totally support the town council for their tough decision regarding cabana use.
It is the first time in years I can go to the beach and enjoy the ocean without maneuvering through dozens of canopies to get a view of the ocean and find a place to sit. I feel we now have our beach back.
The cabanas don’t determine whether we have renters, and they don’t determine whether a stay is unpleasant. Owners determine whether they want to rent, and attitude determines whether the beach trip is pleasant.
Umbrellas provide shade and protection for the young and old. I find it laughable and without merit that having to drive to the beach and not being able to use a canopy is “punishment” and that coolers, chairs and beach balls will be next to be banned.
Ocean Isle Beach is much more than cabana use, and tourists who recognize its charm will continue to rent whether or not a canopy is allowed.
Thank you, town council, for making tough decisions that respect the rights of the majority.
