The man suspected of causing a string of break-ins on Ocean Isle Beach has been arrested. He was jailed on a $121,000 bond on May 19.

Detective Donna Simpson said Jackie Lee Miles Jr. III, 32, of Atkinson, broke into about a half a dozen homes, where he stole televisions, a stereo and speakers and DVD players.

Simpson said officers realized the break-ins were all similar in entry, which brought focus to a single suspect.

Miles was flagged down after being spotted driving a stolen car from Pender County, but he fled the vehicle on foot, Simpson said. He later stole another car from an Ocean Isle Beach home and was apprehended in Mecklenburg County by the Mecklenburg Police Department North District. He was brought back to Brunswick County, where he was charged.

Simpson said Miles also was charged in Pender County, where he was already on probation for a previous offense.

“He was a one-man crime wave going through,” Simpson said.

Officers from Ocean Isle were joined Sunset Beach and Shallotte Police Departments as well as county law enforcement, which helped check vehicles and conduct traffic stops while looking for the suspect.

“It was a joint effort,” Simpson said.

The case is still open for investigation.

For protection, Simpson recommends people document serial numbers of large items, such as televisions or other electronics. Flat-screen televisions are one of the most commonly stolen items, she said. She also encourages residents to immediately report suspicious behavior or activity.

“If you see any suspicious activity at a residence nearby or any suspicious vehicles or persons in the area, don’t hesitate to call local law enforcement to check them out,” she said.
