To the editor:
On July 4 at Ocean Isle Beach, we had the unfortunate experience of our 5-year-old daughter “disappearing.” She lost us in the sea of people as she came up from the shore.
I want to say a heartfelt “thank you” to law enforcement officials who helped me when I called 911. They told me my daughter was in the hands of a woman who had found her wandering, crying and looking for us. They told me exactly which way to walk and how far until I would find her.
Thank you for being there on a holiday and doing your job. Thank you to the nice young woman running an ice cart who let me borrow her phone. She hugged me and told me my child was not in the water and she was OK, and we would find her.
Thank you to the countless people who stopped their playing, resting and family time to help us look for her. And most importantly, thank you to the woman who found my child, whose neck I hugged three times.
I am so thankful to have grown up with my summers spent at Ocean Isle Beach, and to know it is still a family beach after all of these years. This nice woman saw my child wandering, crying and knew something was odd about the situation and she did something about it.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My child is safe.
