Thinks speed limit should be reduced

To the editor: I live off N.C. 179 just before the Regency condominiums facing Sunset Beach. The speed limit is 45 mph.

After 20 years of watching motorists rev up their engines on this stretch of highway in a tremendous, heart-pounding hurry to get to the water, the speed limit needs to be reduced.

And let’s enforce that reduction. On either side of N.C.179 are bedroom neighborhoods with old and young alike often riding bikes, walking, running or entering the highway. Now, with the Sunset Beach Bridge construction ongoing, as well as the addition of golf carts and mopeds used by all generations, this area has the capacity to be either a slower, wonderful drive for tourists and locals alike or a loud drag strip for cars and motorcycles.

I often see Sunset Beach Police patrolling the Sea Trail area. Let’s patrol N.C. 179 as well. Lower the speed limit and hey, while you’re at it, install a wide walking/bike path from the Regency condos to the bridge.

We can be a safer resort area for everyone and enhance our local government’s bottom line by remaining one of the top vacation spots in North Carolina. Win-win.
