GRISSETTOWN—Call it a “thanks-for-putting-up-with-me” treat.
Throughout May, Silver Coast Winery is hosting a “Tribute to Mothers Month,” providing complimentary wine tastings for the mothers and grandmothers who made us who we are today.
“We’ve always done a festival or something every month,” explained winery owner MaryAnn Azzato. “This year, we pulled back a little bit, but we still wanted to do something special every month.”
That’s how the “Tribute to Mothers Month” was born.
“We’re basically encouraging families to be together,” Azzato said.
The free tastings are available when adults bring their mothers and grandmothers to the winery in Grissettown. Moms can take their choice of a five-wine flight of either reds or whites.
The flight of white wines includes Calabash white, which is a combination of two of the winery’s Chardonnays; a 2006 American oak Chardonnay; a rose’; a 2005 white Merlot and a “Holiday Red,” a fruity wine that goes well with the whites on the list, Azzato said.
The red flight includes Calabash Red, another blend of two Silver Coast wines, a 2002 Merlot, a 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, a 2006 Tourigo and a Tesouro.
The mother being honored will also receive a complimentary wine glass to take home.
In June, Azzato and her staff are planning a similar month-long celebration honoring fathers (and grandfathers), she said.
Bocce ball tourney
The winery is also teaming up the Carolinas Italian American Organization (CIAO) to sponsor a bocce ball tournament between July and October, culminating with the winery’s 7th annual “Festa Italia” in October.
Applications for the tournament are being accepted between May 15 and June 15, and the cost of registration is $15 per person. Applicants may sign up in teams of four or as an individual to be placed on open teams.
Possible play dates will be July 11 and 25, Aug. 8 and 15 and Sept. 12 and 19, with the finals set for the Festa Italia on Oct. 17 at the winery.
Silver Coast Winery offers daily wine tastings and tours. It also has unique gift shops, an art gallery, picnic grounds and a barrel room available for wedding and other special events.
The winery is open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday-Satuday and noon until 5 p.m. on Sundays.
From U.S. 17, turn on N.C. 904 W., take the second right onto Russtown Road and the fourth right onto Barbeque Road.
