Fairmont scored the first eight points and defeated West Brunswick 61-51 in a non-conference high school boys’ basketball game last Wednesday in Robeson County.
“We played three good quarters, and the one bad one was pretty much the difference in the game,” said West Brunswick coach Brad Lewis.
Sophomore center Alfy Hill had 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots to lead the Trojans.
Pat Kamfolt made three three-pointers and finished with 13 points, Garrett Sanders added 11 points and three steals and Jordan Buffkin had four points, six rebounds and four steals for West Brunswick.
Leading scorers for Fairmont included Hykeem Stephens with 25 points and Donte Smith and Juwana Disan with 10 apiece.
Stephens scored 11 points in the first quarter to help the Golden Tornadoes build a 17-8 lead. The Trojans cut the deficit to 28-21 at halftime and tied it at 30-30 early in the third quarter.
Fairmont regained the lead with a 6-0 run and West Brunswick never got closer than five points the rest of the game.
“We just used so much energy coming back, and once we tied it and they got up six we could never get it back under five,” Lewis said. “We didn’t play any defense all night, but offensively it was a little bit better.”
West Brunswick, which defeated Fairmont 72-57 in November, slipped to 4-8 overall.
