Staff Report

Alex Brown, a fifth-grade student at Town Creek Elementary School, finished second in the Eastern District Elks Hoop Shoots Free Throw Contest in the 12- to 13- year-old age division.
Brown, 11, competed and won at the school level, which allowed him to go to the Shallotte Lodge’s local competition in December at Shallotte Middle School. (The age division is determined by the competitor’s age on April 1.)
Brown placed and advanced to the district competition.
Brown traveled with his family to the event Jan. 26 in New Bern. The competitors were given 25 shots from the foul line, which is 15 feet from the backboard, or 13 feet, 9 inches to the center of the rim. Brown made 15 baskets, which was two fewer than the first-place total.
The Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is the largest of the many youth activities sponsored by Elks Lodges. More than 3 million boys and girls, ages 8-13, will participate this year.
