Trojans lose close games

West Bladen hit four free throws in the final nine seconds to beat West Brunswick 53-47 in a nonconference high school boys basketball game Dec. 18.

The Trojans (2-8) trailed 45-36 with 2:25 left but, a 3-pointer by Pat Kamfolt and a free throw by Alfy Hill, who was fouled on the play, cut the Knights’ lead to 45-40 with 2:02 left.

A score by Hill and a his two free throws on the next possession left West Brunswick down 47-44 with 66 seconds left.

After the Knights missed two free throws with 57.5 seconds left, West Brunswick missed a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left.

The Knights then hit two free throws with 32.5 seconds left and went ahead 49-44.

West Brunswick missed a shot with 23 seconds, but the Knights missed two free throws with 18.5 seconds left. After West missed a 3-pointer, it fouled and the Knights hit free throws to clinch the victory.

The first quarter ended 7-7, but a 6-0 run by West Brunswick—two free throws by Pat Kamfolt, a score by Ryan Hill and a layup by Charles Brown off a behind-the-back pass from Wally Kamfolt—gave the Trojans a 15-10 lead with 4:36 left.

The Knights then hit nine free throws to take a 19-18 lead and scored with 7.6 seconds left in the quarter for a 21-18 halftime lead.

With West’s two post players having fouled out, White Oak outscored the Trojans 13-8 in the final 3:20 for a 69-62 conference victory Dec. 16.

The score was tied 46-46 before West took a 51-46 lead on jump shot by Eric Hewett, a free throw by Ryan Hill and two free throws by Hewett. White Oak rallied to take a 55-51 lead with 4:03 left, but a three-point play by Wally Kamfolt cut the Viking lead to 55-54 with 3:52.

With Alfy Hill having fouled out earlier in the quarter and Marcus Jackson fouling out with 3:20 left, White Oak gained control against a smaller West lineup. A rebound of a missed free throw gave the Vikings a 59-54 lead, and two more free throws with 3:05 left extended the lead to 61-54.

West rallied behind back-to-back 3-pointers by Pat Kamfolt, the second of which with 1:16 left cut the White Oak lead to 64-60.

After a free throw by the Vikings, West’s Ryan Hill made an acrobatic layup with 47 seconds left, but that would be West’s final score.

In the first quarter West led 7-5 when a technical foul was called on the White Oak coach. Pat Kamfolt hit one of two free throws, and baskets by Alfy Hill and a 3-pointer by Jackson gave the Trojans a 13-7 lead.

White Oak cut the lead to 13-11 by the end of the quarter and tied it with two free throws with 6:27 left in the half.

The score was tied four times after that before a 6-0 run by White Oak gave it a 27-21 lead. The half ended with White Oak ahead 27-23.

The lead early in the third quarter was 33-27, but a 3-pointer by Ryan Hill cut the lead to 36-32, and a basket by Chaz Earp cut White Oak’s lead to 38-36. A 3-pointer by Brian Gore tied the score 40-40, and another 3-pointer, this one by Wally Kamfolt, gave the Trojans a 43-42 lead entering the fourth quarter.

West’s top scorers were Ryan Hill (15) and Eric Hewett (11). Other West scorers: Wally Kamfolt 7, Chaz Earp 4, Brian Gore 3, Pat Kamfolt 9, Marcus Jackson 9, Alfy Hill 4.

West’s junior varsity boys beat White Oak 61-55. Quan Bates had 22 points, Roman Smyth 17 and Marquese Johnson 12. Other scorers: Justin Cook 6, Brandon Lanier and Taylor Bufkin 2.
