Trojans score early, defeat West Bladen

 BLADENBORO—The West Brunswick High School baseball team beat West Bladen 20-6 in a conference game March 19.

The Trojans, 2-1 in the conference, scored eight runs in the first inning en route to the five-inning victory.

Erick Hill was 3-for-4 with a walk and four RBIs. Hunter Howard was 3-for-3 with two walks, two doubles and four RBIs. Markel Jones was 2-for-3 with two walks and one RBI. Chandler Taylor was 3-for-4 with a walk and one RBI. Dustin Darguzas had a single and three RBIs. Khalil Gause was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and he was hit twice by pitches. Cooper Hewett had two RBIs. Cole Josselyn walked twice and had a single. Brett Babson reached on an error in which two runs scored.

In the first, Hill reached on a bunt. Jones singled. Taylor walked, loading the bases. Howard walked, forcing in a run. Darguzas singled inside the third base line, driving in two runs. Khalil Gause singled to left field, scoring a run that put West ahead 4-0.

After a groundout, Josselyn walked, loading the bases. With two outs, Hill doubled to center field, driving in three runs and giving West a 7-0 lead. Jones singled to the right side, driving the final run of the inning.

Brunswick West added a run in the second on a bases-loaded walk to Josselyn. West loaded the bases on a one-out double by Howard, a hit batter (Darguzas) and an infield single to short by Gause.

The Trojans scored six runs in the third, taking advantage of three errors and a balk.

Hill reached on an error, Jones walked and West eventually scored on a balk. Taylor singled in a run, putting West ahead 11-2.

Howard singled up the middle. With one out, Gause was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Hewett singled, scoring a run. With two outs, Babson reached on an error, and two runs scored. Hill singled home West’s 15th run.

West Bladen scored twice in the bottom of the second, the second run on a throwing error.

West Bladen scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of third—the final run on an error—cutting the lead to 15-6.

The Trojans scored twice in the fourth, as Taylor was safe on an infield single, Howard hit a run-scoring double and Darguzas drove in a run on a groundout.

West’s scored three runs in the fifth with the bases loaded off two walks and a hit batter.

Carson Tew started and pitched three innings. He gave up seven hits, walked one, hit one and struck out three.

Ryan Caison finished and pitched two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit, walked two and struck out five.

The victory was the 332nd in coach Mike Alderson’s career at West.
