SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick volleyball team beat North Brunswick 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 in a non-conference match Aug. 27 at West.
“They played a little bit tougher tonight than they have in the past,” coach Larry Salefsky said. “They controlled what was happening at the net. They passed well. We didn’t miss a lot of serves. They played a lot better.”
The first game was tied 10-10 when Hayden Huffman held serve for three points, including an ace.
A block by Myah Morse and Leilani Emile, followed by two aces by Haley Long, gave West an 18-14 lead. Neither team was able to sustain a rally the rest of the game, and the Trojans got the winning point on a kill by Courtney Chappell.
In the second game, West led 18-16 but the Scorpions were serving. A block by Emile led to a sideout and Jordan Clemmons hit two service winners in a 4-0 run that gave West a 23-16 lead en route to the victory.
West took control of the third game after a kill by Chappell put it ahead 13-10. On the ensuing possession, Huffman held serve for five straight points and an 18-10 lead. In the run, Hannah Pugh had a kill, Morse a block and Christian Strickland a tap over the net for a point. Again, neither could hold a rally thereafter before West scored match point on a kill by Emile.
“They’re definitely improving,” Salefsky said. “We have long way to go. But tonight was definitely the best match they played.”
