Trojans win golf tourney on windy day

In the fourth Waccamaw Conference golf tournament of the season, West Brunswick finished first by 22 strokes.
On a chilly, windy day on the St. James Founders Course, the Trojans finished with 355 strokes. West Bladen and Whiteville tied for second. South Brunswick and South Columbus tied for fourth at 382. North Brunswick was sixth (423) out of seven teams.
In the team standings, West, the defending conference champion, is first with 36 points. West Bladen is second with 32 points and South Brunswick third with 30 points. Three regular-season tourneys are left before the conference tournament.
On the par-72, 6,394-yard course, West Brunswick’s top scorers were Landon Patterson and Wade Moody, who shot 87s. Sophomore Drew Boyer shot an 89 and senior Holt Durham a 92.
For South Brunswick, junior Michael Hitt shot an 86, tying for the second best score of the tourney. Junior Nicky Beecroft shot a 94 and junior John Wagoner a 99.
North’s top finisher was David Byrd, who shot a 97.
West Bladen’s Cameron Winebarger shot an 85, the best round of the tourney.
Patterson, a freshman has the best average score through four rounds, an 84.25.
Winebarger is next at 86, followed by Durham and Boyer, at 86.25, Hitt at 87.25 and West Bladen’s Kayla Thompson at 87.5.
