The West Brunswick High School girls’ soccer team beat East Bladen 4-2 in a conference game March 20 at West.
Carla Zio scored all of West’s goals in the first half as the Trojans took a 3-1 lead.
East Bladen scored in the first 34 seconds , but Zio tied the score about 3 minutes, 30 seconds later. Amanda Davinson had the assist.
Zio put West ahead 2-1 at 25:09. Taking a pass from Karson Lewis, Zio angled in from the right side toward the box, sidestepped a defender to the right of her and kicked the ball between two defenders and past the goalkeper for the score.
The final goal of the half was set up by a corner kick by Karson Lewis. She lofted the ball to the middle of the box, where Zio leaped a bumped the ball off her chest past the goalkeeper with 18:34 left in the half.
“At the end of the first half and at the end of the second half, I tried to get my subs in, and even they played well,” West coach Brian Quinn said. “Alexa Evans and Casey Bell on the outside, when I subbed them in, they gave us a good boost of energy.”
Lewis scored West’s final goal, about five minutes into the second half, off an assist from Zio.
Meg Fletcher and Hayden Huffman each gave up a goal in the victory.
The game got more intense late in the second half, and a few non-calls upset some players.
“What I really want to see our team do better, once we have some more games like this,” Quinn said, “is to keep our composure just a little bit more. When we’re up 4-1, it makes no sense getting a yellow card.”
Zio has scored 13 goals this season. West is 2-1 in the conference, 3-3-1 overall, entering next week.
“If the goal in the first 34 seconds didn’t wake them up,” Quinn said, “I’m sure the physical nature of the game woke them up. And that’s exactly what I wanted to see, because next week we have two tough teams that we’re playing.”
West is scheduled to play on March 25 at South Columbus and on March 27 at home against South Brunswick.
