Umbrella accident kills Leland man

Jamie Ward, a Parsley Lane resident who recently moved to Leland from Columbus County, died Friday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after succumbing to injuries sustained from an umbrella accident.

Leland police detective John Keel said around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, a gust of wind blew an umbrella over and a metal probe attached to the umbrella pierced Ward’s head.

“It was a very bizarre accident. I’ve never seen anything like this before,” Keel said.

“This is the truest form of an accident,” he added.
