Unhappy with Republican mailings

To the editor:

Dear N.C. Republican Party leaders:

In the past week, I have received two mass mailings from the North Carolina Republican Party. Both mailings contained scurrilous, biased and deliberately misleading personal attacks on the Democratic candidates for U.S. President and N.C. State Senate.

The mailing about Barack Obama was four pages of malicious (and very old) information about William Ayers, intended to lead any reader to the conclusion Obama must be a terrorist or support terroristic activities.

Nowhere in this document was there any information about the political goals and positions of either political party, and nowhere was there any information in support of the Republican candidate for president.

The mailing about Sen. R.C. Soles uses a news report taken out of context to imply he has had numerous run-ins with local police. It goes on to say he is lying about Republican Bettie Fennell, but nowhere does it actually say what the alleged lies are about.

In the 40-plus years I have been voting in this country, I have always registered as an independent and frequently supported good Republican candidates for office, but never again will I do so.

The dirty and misleading campaigning being done by the National Republican Party and especially by the N.C. Republican Party and its state executive committee are so morally and ethically offensive to me I have already voted early, and for the first time in my life I voted the straight Democratic Party ticket.

If the Republican Party is so completely unable to put forward candidates who can win races by articulating their personal positions on issues important to their constituents, then I do not want any of those candidates leading me.
