To the editor: My name is James Saunders. I’m writing to you in regard to the many inmates being held here in the Brunswick County Jail for weeks, even months at a time, after being sentenced to the N.C. Department of Corrections.
[At the time of writing this letter], I will have been here for 17 days waiting to be shipped.
Holding inmates at this rate is costing Brunswick County taxpayers thousands of dollars per month for no justified reason. As a taxpayer of this county, I think it’s only fair they (other taxpayers) be notified as well as to how their tax dollars are being wasted here by the Brunswick County Jail.
I would also like for it to be known the faucets, toilets and showers here in this so-called new facility leak 24 hours a day non-stop. There should be a law that these facilities be checked every six months by a county or state inspector.
To be a new facility, this one is at a true loss, and so are the taxpayers of Brunswick County who pay taxes to keep this facility running.
