The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team avenged a 30-point loss to Aiken Tech by beating the Knights 80-76 Sunday on Walter Shaw Court in the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics gym.
The Knights hit eight 3-pointers in the first half but BCC held them to none in the second half. The BCC defense held the Knights to three points in the final 3 minutes, 21 seconds.
For BCC (13-11), Steve Johnson scored 25 points, Quinton Morrow 15, Kameko Walls 11 and Marcus Graham 10.
Aiken led 73-70 when Morrow blocked a shot and scored seven of the Dolphins’ next nine points as they took a 79-76 lead.
After Morrow blocked the shot, he scored and cut the lead to 73-72. The Knights hit a free throw but BCC when ahead for good when Morrow converted a three-point play with 1:34 left. Johnson hit two free throws with 59.4 seconds left, but Aiken scored with 45.6 seconds left and cut the lead to 77-76.
Morrow scored with 31.9 seconds left and Johnson scored the final point with 10.8 seconds left.
In the first half, Johnson scored eight of BCC’s first 10 points as the Dolphins and the Knights played to a 10-10 tie. The Knights (8-16) hit two 3-pointers, and that foreshadowed the rest of the half. After the Dolphins’ Walls hit a 3-pointer from the right wing, Aiken scored on back-to-back 3-pointers in taking a 28-24 lead with 9:34 left. The Knights hit another 3-pointer in a 7-0 run in extending the lead to 35-24 with 7:53 left. The Knights’ eighth 3-pointer of the half put them ahead 45-30 with 4:05 left.
BCC then dominated the rest of the half, outscoring the Knights 11-3 in cutting the lead to 48-41 by halftime. In the run, Zack Chandler hit a 3-pointer from the left baseline. Lawson Ahrens scored on a rebound. Johnson scored the final four points in finishing the half with 14 points.
