West JV wins conference
On Oct. 11, West Brunswick clinched the junior varsity conference title with a 2-1 victory over visiting Whiteville.
“I knew this was a great bunch of kids the very first day of practice and that we had the talent to win the title this year,” coach Steve Nagy said. “We kept telling the boys all year that if we keep getting better each day, the wins will come and they certainly didn’t disappoint.
“We took control of the game right away, and had many scoring chances,  but just couldn’t find the net. Finally, in the 25th minute, Johan Marin took the ball and scored from just outside the 18.
“I told them at the half not to let up and keep up the pressure. In the second half Whiteville had some early chances and then tied it up with 15 minutes to go. But our guys didn’t give up and kept playing hard Campbell Alspaugh scored the game winner with 3:30 left.”
Trey Tatum had three saves.
