The West Brunswick baseball team beat Winslow Township (Atco, N.J.) 11-0 in five innings a first-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational Monday night in Shallotte.
Brett Babson threw a no-hitter for four innings and reliever Johnnie Turner gave up one hit in the shutout. Babson walked four, hit two and struck out seven.
West continued to be aggressive on the basepaths, twice using the delayed double steal in a three-run first inning.
Erick Hill led off with a walk and Markel Jones singled up the middle, putting runners on third and first. An error on a pickoff during a delayed steal led to a run. Chandler Taylor drove in the second run when he hit a triple to right field.
With two outs, Khalil Gause was hit by pitch, putting runners on third and first. Again, the delayed steal led to an error and a run scored, putting West ahead 3-0.
West scored a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Howard after loading the bases on a hit batter, a bunt by Hill and a single by Jones.
The Trojans scored five runs in the third, all with two outs. Cole Josselyn hit a run-scoring double, driving in Gause, who had led off with a single. Hill reached on an infield hit and Jones walked, loading the bases. Taylor singled home two runs, giving West a 7-0 lead.
After Howard was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, Dustin Darguzas singled to left field, driving home two runs for a 9-0 lead.
The Trojans scored twice in the fourth on a single by Hill and a double by Taylor.
West finished with 10 hits. Taylor was 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a triple and four RBIs. Hill finished 3-for-3 with a walk and one RBI. Jones was 2-for-2 and walked twice. Dustin Darguzas was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Josselyn had a run-scoring double and was hit by a pitch.
The victory was the 335th for coach Mike Alderson.
The West softball team lost 5-1 to Richmond (Rockingham) in a first-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational Monday night in Shallotte.
Richmond scored four runs off four hits and two errors in the fourth inning in taking a 5-1 lead.
