West beats East Bladen in tennis

The West Brunswick High School girls’ tennis team beat East Bladen 8-1 on Sept. 11.
In singles, Penny Watts (WB) beat Carolina Sarmiento 6-0, 6-0. Rachel Norton (WB) beat Samantha Bratt 6-0, 6-0. Sarah Harman (WB) beat Gabrielle Monroe 6-0, 6-0. Anna James (WB) beat Sha’Lite Campbell 6-1, 6-1. Ashley Carter (WB) beat Shamek Brooks 6-1, 6-2. Hayley Grimes (WB) beat Kristi McDowell 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Watts and Norton (WB) beat Sarmiento and Monroe 8-0. Kathleen Conway and Harley Lytton (WB) beat Bratt and Campbell 9-7. McDowell and Christina Odom (EB) beat Allie Madison and Abigail Bentley 9-8 (5).
In a nonconference match on Sept. 12, West lost 9-0 to Class 4A Laney.
In singles, Penny Watts lost to Channing Bugbee 6-2, 6-3. Rachel Norton lost to Louisa Cone 6-1, 6-3. Sarah Harman lost to Hayley Meier 6-2, 6-2. Victoria Jordan lost to Erin Nesselroad 6-1, 6-2. Anna James lost Addie Humphrey 4-6, 6-1 (10-8). Ashley Carter lost to Anna Porcellie 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, Bugbee and Meier beat Watts and Norton 8-5. Cone and Nesselroad beat Harman and James 8-4. Humphrey and Schoolfield beat Grimes and Madison 8-4.
“West played a very good match,” Mehalick said. “Very pleased with everyone’s effort. I saw a lot of good shots played, just not enough to get many games.”
