Tew, Babson no-hit Laney

 Ashley beat the West Black 6-4 in a CCSSL game July 9 in Shallotte.


Ashley scored three unearned runs in the top of the first against Connor Durham. After a one-out hit and a walk, three runs scored on an infielder’s throwing error, an errant throw on a delayed steal and a pitch in the dirt.

The lead went to 5-0 in the top of the second inning on a single, a one-walk and a two-run double.

West (6-3) scored twice in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 5-2. With one out, Greg Noll singled to right field. With two outs, Chris Nolan reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Zack Fish was safe when the third baseman fielded on the run his grounder and overthrew first base. A run scored on the play. Cameron Lewis was safe on an infield single and a run scored.

Ashley scored in the fifth after getting a leadoff single. The runner moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A walk left runners on second and first. A run scored when West attempted a double play and there was an error on the throw to first.

In the sixth, West scored two runs. West loaded the bases on a one-out double to left by Garrison Gause and two-out walks to Cameron Lewis and Nolan. Fish walked, forcing in a run.

Facing a new pitcher, Tristan Lewis singled through the left side of the infield, driving in a run that cut the lead to 6-4.

West threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh. Johnson led off with a single and Babson singled to left field. Carson Tew was safe on a fielder’s choice. But Ashley won the game after getting two pop-ups.

Durham pitched two innings, giving up five runs, three of them unearned. He gave up three hits and two walks.

Tristan Lewis pitched five innings, giving up one unearned run and two hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Tristan Lewis finished with two hits and two RBIs. Noll and Babson each had two hits.


Tew, Babson

throw no-hitter

Carson Tew and Brett Babson threw a combined no-hitter as the West Black beat Laney 3-1 in seven innings July 8 in Wilmington.

Tew struck out six and walked one in four innings. He gave up an unearned run in the fourth. Babson struck out five and walked two in three innings.

Tew also had two hits, including a in the second. Garrison Gause hit a double in the sixth. Babson, Cameron Lewis and Zack Johnson also had hits.
