West Brunswick beats South, Jacksonville

The West Brunswick baseball team improved to 5-1 in the Mideastern Conference by beating Jacksonville 4-3 April 8. West got five hits and made three errors in the victory. The game was tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the fifth, but West broke the tie when Pat Kamfolt led off with a double to center field, went to third on Wally Kamfolt’s flyout to right and scored on Josh Powell’s sacrifice fly to right field.

Lorenzo Pigott was the winning pitcher, allowing no runs and no hits in the fifth and sixth innings. He hit one batter, intentionally walked one and struck out two.

Jacksonville threatened to score in the sixth when its leadoff batter was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a bunt. An infield error gave the Cardinals runners at third and second. Pigott intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases to get forceouts at any base. He got the second out by a strikeout and got the third out on a grounder to shortstop Pat Kamfolt, who flipped the ball to Wally Kamfolt at second for the force.

Jay Gause pitched the ninth, and he struck out the cleanup hitter, who was leading off, in four pitchers. A flyout and a groundout ended the game.

Randy Daniels started and pitched four innings. West led 3-2 entering the fourth, but the Cardinals tied the scored off a bunt—the runner went to third on an overthrow—and a groundout.

Center fielder Ryan Hill got the second out when he sprinted from center field to left to make a diving catch. The next batter singled, but Daniels ended the inning with a strikeout.

SOUTH 1

West Brunswick took advantage of eight errors by South Brunswick in beating the Cougars 18-1 in five innings in a nonconference baseball game April 9 at West.

West (11-3) scored 13 runs in the second inning, in which there were six walks and five errors. West led 5-1 with two outs in the second when Jay Gause hit a fly ball that the right fielder dropped. West went on to score eight runs in taking a 13-1 lead.

Gause hit two triples and finished 2-for-4. Blain Turner doubled and had three RBIs. He was hit by a pitch and reached twice on errors. Ryan Hill walked, sacrificed and had two RBIs. Wally Kamfolt walked, singled and had two RBIs. Josh Powell was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Logan Tripp was 1-for-2 with a walk. Justin Cook walked twice and reached on a fielder’s choice. Pat Kamfolt walked and reached twice on errors. Alex Memory walked and reached on an error and a fielder’s choice.

Brock Holmes was the winning pitcher. He gave up three hits and one run in four innings. He walked two and struck out one. Gavin Lane pitched the fifth inning and struck out two.

South scored its only run on a single in the first inning by Ryan Brendle.

JACKSONVILLE 10

West beat Jacksonville 12-10 in a conference game April 8. West led 10-5 after five innings en route to the victory.

Hunter Allen finished with two doubles and one RBI. Timmy Powell had a sacrifice, a single, a double and two RBIs. Jesse Simmons doubled and had one RBI. Bruce Clewis tripled and had two RBIs. Jake Zemaitas had one RBI. Shawn Ward had a singled and three RBIs. Josh Cortes doubled.

WITH SOUTH

The West junior varsity split a five-inning doubleheader April 8 with South, winning 7-4 and losing 8-4.

In the victory, Hunter Allen was 2-for-3 with a walk. Timmy Powell was 1-for-3. Jesse Simmons doubled and singled and had one RBI. Jake Zemaitas was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Shawn Ward was 1-for-2. Marquise Johnson was 1-for-2.

Bruce Clewis was the winning pitcher.

West made five errors in the 8-4 loss. Allen had a double. Powell was 1-for-3. Clewis was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Josh Cortes was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Johnson was 1-for-2 with a double.
