West Brunswick opened the conference baseball season with victories over Hoggard and Ashley and then extended its winning streak to seven with an 8-6 victory Monday night over Sullivan South.
Brock Holmes pitched a three-hitter in a complete-game victory over Ashley. Ryan Hill drove in the winning runs against Sullivan when he hit a three-run home run with two outs in the sixth inning.
West, 7-1 overall, plays a home conference game Friday against 3-A rival Jacksonville.
Below are summaries of the games.
WEST 12 HOGGARD 8
WILMINGTON—West Brunswick loaded the bases seven times en route to beating Hoggard 12-8 in the first game of the conference baseball season.
Wally Kamfolt finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jay Gause was 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs. Alex Memory was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Ryan Hill was 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Nick Napolitano was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Gause was the winning pitcher, throwing six innings in the seven-inning game. He gave up seven runs and seven hits. He struck out six and walked two.
Memory pitched the final inning, giving up one run, one hit and one walk. He hit one batter.
West scored four runs in the first, the first two on an error on a bunt attempt by Wally Kamfolt. Hill and Pat Kamfolt, who had walked, scored. Josh Powell walked and Gause singled. One out later, Memory singled to left field, driving in two runs for a 4-0 lead.
Hoggard cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the second off two walks, a single, a sacrifice fly and another single.
But West took control in the top of the third, scoring seven runs for an 11-3 lead. Walks to Gause, Logan Tripp and Justin Cook loaded the bases with one out. Napolitano, the No. 9 hitter, singled to center, driving in a run. Hill doubled to right field, putting West ahead 7-3. Pat Kamfolt walked, loading the bases. Wally Kamfolt was safe on an infield single, scoring a run. Powell was safe on an error, and a run scored. A walk to Gause forced in a run, and the seventh run of the inning scored when Tripp was hit by a pitch.
Hoggard scored in the bottom of the third on two singles, but West matched that run in the top of the fourth when Napolitano led off with a single. Pinch runner Damian Burney went to second on a groundout. After a walk to Pat Kamfolt, Burney scored on a sacrifice fly by Wally Kamfolt.
Hoggard scored three times in the fifth on two singles, a triple and a wild pitch. It scored its final run in the seventh on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.
Also for West, Cook was 1-for-3 with two walks. Powell walked in five at-bats. Tripp walked once and was hit twice by pitches. Pat Kamfolt walked three times.
The Trojans beat Ashley 2-0 in a conference game Friday at Ashley. West scored once in the second and third innings in the victory, which gave the Trojans a 2-0 record in the conference.
Jay Gause finished 2-for-3 with a double. Ryan Hill was 2-for-4. Logan Tripp doubled.
Brock Holmes was the winning pitcher as he held Ashley to three hits in its first loss in seven games. He struck out four and walked none.
Ryan Hill hit a three-run home run with two outs in the sixth inning, driving in the winning runs in West Brunswick’s 8-6 victory Monday over Sullivan South.
Sullivan, of Kingsport, Tenn., scored four unearned runs in the third on two misplayed fly balls in right field, taking a 4-2 lead.
But Josh Powell singled in a run with two outs in the bottom of the third and he singled to right field with two outs in the fifth, tying the score 4-4.
Sullivan scored twice in the top of the sixth on four straight singles, taking a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, pinch hitter Brock Holmes singled and Justin Cook, the No. 9 hitter, followed with single. Hill then homered to left field, putting West ahead 7-6.
Pat Kamfolt walked and he scored on Wally Kamfolt’s triple.
Alex Memory pitched the seventh. He struck out the first batter but walked two. With runners on third and second and two outs, he ended the game on a called third strike.
Randy Daniels started and gave up four unearned runs and one hit in three innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Gavin Lane pitched two innings, giving up one hit. He hit one batter, walked one and struck out two.
Lorenzo Pigott pitched one inning, giving up four hits and two runs. He hit one batter.
West scored twice in the first on a single by Powell and a groundout by Gause.
Powell finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Hill finished 1-for-3 with the three-run homer. Tripp was 2-for-3. Wally Kamfolt tripled in three at-bats and had one RBI. Jay Gause was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Turner, Holmes and Cook each had singles.
West’s fundraising game has been rescheduled for Saturday.
