Soccer team drops opener to Hoggard
The West Brunswick High School girls’ soccer team kicked off its season Monday with a 3-0 loss to Mideastern 3A/4A Conference rival Hoggard.
“Hoggard is a very competitive team as always and we really struggled offensively, but our defense had an excellent game,” said West Brunswick coach Laura Libero. “The girls put in such a valiant effort.”
Libero said defenders Katelyn Humbert, Erin Nolan, Monica Young, Amanda Silva and Erin Oepen played well as a group. Goalkeeper Ariel Gravino recorded nine saves.
“They all worked very well together and kept the score down to 3-0. All three goals were scored in the first half. In the second half they kept it at 3-0,” Libero said.
“We really struggled to get any offensive momentum going, but I think that can be attributed to having one practice with our basketball players. That was the first time they’ve had the ball at their feet this year.”
West Brunswick had a conference match scheduled Wednesday at White Oak and a non-conference match slated Thursday at home against Dixon.
Next week, the Lady Trojans will host Ashley on Monday and Laney on Wednesday.
The West Brunswick boys’ tennis team opened its season Monday with a 6-3 loss at North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Alex Humbert was a winner at No. 6 singles for the Trojans. Caleb Hawkins and Derek Leavitt won at No. 1 doubles, and Jack Donoghue and Chandler Inions won at No. 3 doubles.
West Brunswick had two more road matches scheduled this week—Tuesday at South Brunswick and Thursday at Clinton.
