Rachel Van Noordt and Morgan Gilbert each won an individual event and a relay as the South Brunswick girls’ swim team finished second in a six-team meet Saturday afternoon at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center.
Van Noordt, a senior, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 29.93 seocnds, a time that qualified her for the regional in February.
Gilbert, a sophomore, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:24.73 (a consideration time).
Van Noordt and Gilbert then teamed with sophomore Savanna Michaux and sophomore Lauren Johnson to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:55:13, a time that qualified the relay for the state-qualifying regional. Van Noordt and Gilbert were on South’s 200 freestyle relay that qualified for state last year and finished in 1:56.81. (The winning time was 1:37.05.)
Van Noordt finished second in the 100 freestyle in 58.40 seconds, but that also was an automatic-qualifying time. Her time is quicker than her time last year at the state meet (1:00.65; the championship time was 50.55).
Saturday, no other South or West Brunswick swimmers achieved automatic qualifying times, but many achieved consideration times.
In the girls’ team competition, Topsail was first (108), South second (76) and West sixth (12).
In the boys’ team competition, Topsail was first (114), West fourth (33) and South fifth (28). Other teams at the meet were Jacksonville, White Oak and Lumberton.
The only other county winner was South sophomore Mason Brendle in the 100 freestyle (59.91 seconds, a consideration time).
South sophomore Ryan Goodson was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:14.72 (a consideration time).
West junior Elijah Pridgen was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:20.84 (a consideration time).
Other swimmers in individual events who attained consideration times: South’s Johnson in the 200 and 500 freestyle, South’s Brinkley Farmer in the 200 freestyle, West’s Meg Fletcher in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, Michaux in the 50 freestyle, Brendle in the 50 freestyle, Gilbert in the 100 butterfly, South’s Brooke Beasley in the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke and West’s David Venegas in the 100 breaststroke.
The next home meet is 1 p.m. Jan. 5. The last home meet is 3 p.m. Jan. 25. The state meet is Feb. 7-9 at the Triangle Aquatic Center.
