West, South swimmers finish regular season

 BOLIVIA—South Brunswick’s girls and West Brunswick’s boys won the final swim meet of the regular season Friday at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center.


South’s girls beat West 123-18. West’s boys beat South 76-36. South won the overall meet between the two teams 159-94.

The most competitive events were the freestyle races. Fourteen girls competed in the 50 freestyle, and South senior Rachel Van Noordt won in 26.46 seconds. South sophomore Mason Brendle won the nine-swimmer boys’ 50 freestyle in 25.13 seconds. West sophomore Christian Chaney was second in 26.86.

In the girls’ 100 freestyle, Van Noordt won in 59.38 seconds, beating eight other competitors. In the boys’ 100 freestyle, Brendle won in 59.50 seconds, beating six other competitors. Chaney was second in 62.44 seconds.

Another competitive event was the girls’ 100 breaststroke, which had five swimmers. South junior Morgan Gilbert won in 1:24.43, beating senior teammate Brooke Beasley by two seconds. Gilbert also won the 100 butterfly in 1:13.60, beating teammate Lauren Johnson by nearly 8 seconds.

In other events with more than one swimmer, West freshman Dustin Ruppart won the 200 freestyle in 2:25.21, winning by 7 seconds. South junior Alyssa Ward won the 100 backstroke in 1:27.22, beating teammate Hannah Jones by 5 seconds.

The NCHSAA Class 3A East Regional, which is a qualifier for the state meet, is 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.


South girls win at Lumberton

In a five-team swim meet Jan. 22 in Lumberton, South Brunswick won the overall competition, finishing with 149 points. Pinecrest High School was second at 141, Lumberton third at 86,West Brunswick fourth at 84 and Purnell Swett last at 25.

In the four-team girls’ meet, South was first at 112 points and West fourth at 28.

In the five-team boys’ meet, Pinecrest was first at 79, West second at 56 and South fourth at 37.

For South’s girls, the team of Savanna Michaux, Morgan Gilbert, Lauren Johnson and Rachel Van Noordt won the 200 IM medley in 2:16.89 (consideration for regional).

Van Noordt won the 50 freestyle in 27.27 (consideration) and won the 100 backstroke in 1:10.38 (consideration). Johnson, a sophomore, won the 100 butterfly in 1:26.62. Gilbert won the 100 freestyle in 1:04.25 (consideration).

South’s team of Michelle Richards, Michaux, Gilbert and Van Noordt won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:55.94 (consideration).

South’s team of Brooke Beasley, Richards, Katelyn Auger and Johnson won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:46.40 (consideration)

For South’s boys, sophomore Mason Brendle won the 50 freestyle in 25.38 (consideration) and won the 100 freestyle in 1:02.23.

For West’s girls, Meg Fletcher won the 200 in 2:28.19 (consideration).

For West’s boys, freshman Dustin Ruppart won the 200 freestyle in 2:27.47.
