West Brunswick’s tennis team beat Jacksonville High 5-4 last Tuesday in Jacksonville.

“It was our first win, and it took up until the final doubles match for the match to be decided,” said West coach Bob Bell.

Brian Conness, Alex Humbert and Derek Leavitt won their singles matches to make it 3-3 going into doubles.

“Brian Conness’ win was huge, because to have a chance, either he or Caleb Hawkins was going to have to win a match, and Caleb lost a tight one 6-4, 6-3,” Bell said.

“Alex Humbert came from being down 2-6 in the first set to take the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1. Alex never gave up and just kept coming back at his opponent until he got the upper hand.”

Leavitt took the final set of his three-set match 6-2.

“He had a good practice week, and it paid off in the match,” Bell said. “It was nice to see us win some third sets. It shows the kids are bearing down for their entire match.”

Caleb Hawkins and Derek Leavitt took the first doubles match 8-6.

“This was huge, because it meant we only had to win one of the next two matches,” Bell said. “In the second match, Brighton Mintz and Alex Humbert ran into a strong second team and lost 8-3. That left it up to Chandler Inions and Jack Donohue, who played very well together and won 8-2.

“Winning was nice but the fact that it was a conference win made it even nicer. These kids have been working hard, and it’s great to see their hard work rewarded with a win.”
