Wally Kamfolt had three hits and three RBIs as West beat Hoggard 8-2 in a conference baseball game April 21. Kamfolt also scored two runs and played textbook second base for the unstoppable Trojans.
West beat Hoggard 12-8 earlier this year in the first game of the conference season.
Brock Holmes had another good outing, especially after the coaches corrected his slight delivery problems in the first inning. He allowed one hit and one walk in that inning.
Ryan Hill led things off for the Trojans with the first of his two singles for the evening and went to second on a wild pitch. An error on the Viking third baseman allowed Hill to go to third, but Pat Kamfolt was thrown out trying to take second. Wally Kamfolt quickly singled to center to score Hill, and Josh Powell also singled. First baseman Logan Tripp singled home Kamfolt for a 2-0 lead. Nick Napolitano, the designated hitter, doubled home Tripp for a 3-0 lead going into the second inning.
In the second, it was three up, three down for Holmes, as he got his rhythm back.
In the bottom of the second, Pat Kamfolt walked and Wally Kamfolt singled him home for a 4-0 West lead.
In the third, Holmes did a great job of mixing his pitches, especially his sinker, and he only allowed the Vikings three groundballs, which his infield quickly handled for outs.
In the top of the fourth with a runner on first for Hoggard, Wally Kamfolt snagged a grounder hit up the middle, stepped on second and threw out the batter out at first.
All three batters for Hoggard grounded out in the top of the fifth, mainly because of Tripp at first digging two balls out the dirt on some low throws.
In the bottom of the fifth, Josh Powell lashed a double. Tripp Bartholomew came in to run for Powell. Jay Gause walked and Logan Tripp was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with two outs. A balk by the Viking pitcher allowed Bartholomew to score for a 5-0 West lead going into the sixth inning.
The Vikings had their best inning in the top of the sixth. A single, an error and a batter hit by a pitch loaded the bases. A walk forced in a run. A long fly ball scored their second and final run, as Holmes struck out the last batter for his only strikeout of the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Trojans scored three times. The speedy Hill singled for his second hit of the game. Pat Kamfolt walked as the Vikings did not give him anything to hit, and then Wally Kamfolt singled home both runners for a 7-2 lead. After Wally Kamfolt’s single, the Viking team decided to change pitchers. Powell drove in the last run in for West.
Jay Gause pitched one inning of relief, surrendering only a walk, and the Hoggard team was done for the evening.
