To the editor:
Just when we thought the Sunset Beach Town Council couldn’t possibly get more elitist, arrogant, and unrepresentative than they already are, they amaze us once again.
To make a complicated story short, council member Wilson Sherrill, in a fit of pique following the determination that his Sept. 18 community meeting was actually an illegal campaign event — and mistakenly believing that everyone owns real estate in their own name (instead of via a trust, an LLC, a family member, etc.) — directed the following attack at Mayor Rich Cerrato:
“The council is only trying to inform/educate the legal property owners of Sunset Beach of the pertinent issues, [sic] of which you are not a property owner (check brunsco.net tax records)…”
Sunset Beach renters: Did you know that your town council doesn’t represent you? The council, apparently, doesn’t have the time of day for people who aren’t “legal property owners of Sunset Beach.”
It seems that the Voting Rights Act has been repealed in Sunset Beach. Here, only a property owner is worthy to cast a ballot. What is next, Councilman Sherrill? Literacy tests? Poll taxes?
Throw this onto the trash heap with no sidewalks, dirt roads, raises and bonuses for town employees, the pier head alignment giveaway, financial chaos, the pointless park, the Jaguar’s Lair mess, parking madness, no bike trails, and free dinners for all.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5. It’s time to take care of business.
